Welcome to the BIG world/ Willkommen in der RIESEN Welt

This is my first update from the US since I arrived here two days ago. After a week full of packing, meeting people, hanging out at birthdays with the family, I was ready for take off. The flight was smooth and 9,5 hours didn't seem to be long after all. I was really grateful for an American friend I had met in Germany who was willing to pick us (me and another German exchange) up and accomodate us for the first few days. Still I am overwhelmed by the hospitality of the people around here!

Jetlag was not as bad as expected, after a 17 hours sleep we felt alive again and are now ready to conquer new grounds in Greensboro! So far we have seen a lot already, we made two roadtrips to the major cities Charlotte and Raleigh. Cities look very different than German cities, they are open and offer quite some space, while German cities are all tiny and packed. One can see that you're in the South, the houses look great with big patios and gardens, the obligatory US flag and huge cars in the driveway.

In general, everything seems to be big. Cars, roads, furniture, houses, food...The house we stay in right now is beautiful, has lots of space and is the perfect hangout for the first few days. Much better than staying in a hotel! Many things remind me of South Africa, like the traffic lights (um, sorry, robots for the SA people=)), the huge malls...
I can't really say a lot yet as I have not seen so much of the city yet. We drive around a lot (thank God for a friend with a car), only later we will go downtown and walk around a bit. I hope to rent or buy a bike, otherwise transportation seems to be a bit difficult. So far I like what I see and experience, it's a nice little town and I am excited to dive into it!

Culture seems to be a whole new issue again. We went shopping on the first day and got confused by the different kind of linens you can buy. Is it just the sheets or the covers or both? Actually it's just a word and yet it hides so much of confusion which made me wonder at language and its implications all over again! So we'll see how it turns out. I will meet a whole bunch of new people and I am excited to see how they do things and how we all dive into that new culture!
So you can expect to read more soon. Tomorrow we will settle into the dorms and then the official orientation will start...

Mein erstes Update aus den USA seit ich vor zwei Tagen hier angekommen bin! Nach einer Woche voller Packen, Leute treffen und 80. Geburtstag meiner Oma, war ich endlich startklar. Der Flug war gut und 9,5 Stunden kamen einem gar nicht so lange vor. Ich bin wirklich dankbar für eine amerikanische Freundin, die ich kurz in Deutschland kennengelernt hatte, dass sie uns (mich und einen anderen dt. Austauschstudenten) abgeholt hat. Wir dürfen die ersten Tage bei ihr wohnen. Ich bin immer noch erstaunt über die Gastfreundlichkeit der Leute hier! Der Jetlag war gar nicht so schlimm wie erwartet, nach 17 Stunden Schlaf fühlte ich mich wieder wach und jetzt bin ich bereit, neues Land in Greensboro zu erobern!
Wir haben schon einiges gesehen, da wir viel unterwegs waren zwischen Charlotte und Raleigh. Die Städte sehen ganz anders als, sind viel weitläufiger und nicht so gequetscht wie manche dt. Städte. Man kann sehen, dass man im Süden ist, die Häuser sehn süß ist mit großem Garten, Terrasse und der typischen Flagge. 
Generell scheint alles riesig zu sein. Autos, Straßen, Möbel, Häuser, Essen...Das Haus, in dem wir wohnen, ist wunderbar, mit viel Platz und einfach perfekt für die ersten paar Tage, viel besser als ein Hotel! Viel erinnert mich an Südfrika, wie die Ampeln auf der anderen Seite, die riesigen Shopping Centers...Zu viel kann ich noch nicht sagen, da wir erst heute wirklich die Stadt erkunden. Wir fahren viel rum (zum Glück haben wir Freunde mit Autos!), sonst ist es wirklich schwer mit Verkehrsmitteln. Hoffentlich kann ich ein Fahrrad ausleihen oder kaufen. Aber soweit gefällt es mir hier, es ist eine süße Stadt und ich freu mich drauf, mehr davon zu sehn!

Kultur wird sicher auch wieder eine spannende Sache. Am ersten Tag waren wir einkaufen und ich war total verwirrt von dem ganzen Bettzeug. Brauchen wir nur Bezüge oder auch Bettdecken und so? Eigentlich geht es nur um ein einziges Wort und trotzdem birgt es so viel Verwirrung. Das hat mich wieder zum Staunen gebracht über Sprache und was sich alles dahinter versteckt! Bin gespannt, wie das so wird, da wir Leute aus aller Welt sind und jeder Sachen anders sieht. 

 Ihr könnt also noch so einiges erwarten. Morgen ziehen wir in unsere Zimmer ein und dann beginnt der offizielle Teil des Semesters...
